Mental Enrichment and Stimulation for Your Dog - By Life Stages

Mental enrichment and stimulation for our dogs are essential at every single stage of their lives: from playful puppyhood, through adulthood, and into their senior years - where the body might get a bit heavier, but the desire and mental drive are absolutely still there.

In each life stage, our goals and expectations from toys differ slightly, but the foundation of the whole story always remains the same: they need to have fun!

When we talk about stimulation and enrichment, it is best to look at a dog's life stages a bit differently than we usually do in the worlds of nutrition or vaccinations:

  • Puppies & Adolescents: Ages 0-2

  • Adulthood: Ages 2-7

  • Senior: Ages 7 and up

So, how do you tailor mental stimulation to each stage? Let’s break it down.

Puppies and Adolescents (Ages 0-2): Learning the World

When we look at a puppy or a young dog, we see a four-legged creature in the absolute prime of its learning process. They are experiencing the world for better and for worse, and we need to fulfill their natural needs while going through the training process.

If you have ever consulted a dog trainer, you have likely come across a warm recommendation to incorporate "feeder toys," "skinners," and puzzle games into their daily routine. The reason for this is simple: young dogs must release energy. If we are talking about a puppy under one year old, it is crucial to remember that any lack of stimulation or energy release (depending on the breed and its needs) will quickly translate into what we like to call... "interior redesigning" of the house.

Since we are all busy people and cannot always dedicate hours a day to activities, this is where proper environmental management and preparation in advance come into play. Feeder toys and puzzle games are a wonderful way for dogs to release energy, as mental work is just as tiring as physical work (just think of the last time you sat for hours studying for a difficult exam).

How to do it right at this stage?

A combination of toys like the Udon, the Pebble, the Trove, and even the Grip provides the perfect solution for prolonged engagement:

  • The Udon: Allows you to hide high-value treats inside and create knots that challenge the dog, extending their engagement time and requiring them to problem-solve.

  • The Pebble: A 3-in-1 product! It can be used as an active treat-dispensing game, made more challenging for the dog using the internal Blocker, or simply filled with dry food, treats, or wet food.

  • The Grip: Provides a comfortable and strong hold for bones and chews that dogs love.

Our Tip: To generate even greater interest, hide the food toys around the house. A searching game (nosework) is delicious, challenging, and above all - extremely tiring and satisfying!

Keep the play environments reasonable, and initially, try this while you are home with your dog before leaving them alone with it - this prevents frustration and ensures the dog is playing correctly.

Adulthood (Ages 2-7): Raising the Difficulty Level

A dog that learned from a young age to solve puzzles, use their nose, and work to get their food and treats enters adulthood as a "pro." In their adult life, these abilities will manifest in amazing ways, and this is exactly our time to challenge them even further and increase the difficulty levels.

At this stage, the game is no longer just about "how to keep them busy so they don't destroy the couch," but rather how to develop their cognitive abilities. Everything we put inside the feeder toys can become a challenge: from freezing the food, to combining different textures, to more complex knots.

Senior Dogs (Ages 7+): Pampering and Comfort

As our dogs reach an older age, it often becomes harder for them to release energy in the physical and intense ways they were used to. At the same time, their mental need and desire for activity remain completely alive.

Combining the right toys with the appropriate fillings can completely transform the quality of life for a senior dog. At this stage, our goal changes - we are no longer looking for them to "work hard" and rack their brains, but rather to mostly enjoy themselves and feel pampered.

In Lunoji’s Trove bowl, for example, there are special internal grooves. They make it more challenging for the dog to lick the contents once the texture becomes liquid, which extends feeding time and creates a soothing, enriching, and delicious licking activity.

Lunoji’s Grip helps provide a better hold on chew sticks for prolonged chewing, preventing mess and odors on the dog's paws.

This is exactly the stage to prepare a wide variety of recipes and ideas for them (you can find excellent recipes on our blog!).

The Importance of Ergonomics and Accessibility:

Combining the Trove or the Grip along with the Base allows us to provide maximum comfort for the dog thanks to an elevated and correct eating angle, while keeping the house clean from leftovers and drool.

Important Note: These tips and recommendations are also highly applicable to adult dogs or puppies suffering from physical limitations, injuries, or orthopedic issues that prevent them from releasing energy in conventional ways.

A Few Words to Conclude

Enrichment and feeder games are not a "trend" - they are an essential tool for maintaining your dog's mental and physical health throughout their entire life. The good news? It is never too late to start and introduce your dog to new worlds.

The secret is to always work gradually to prevent frustration: make sure that at the beginning of the journey, the difficulty level is very easy, and raise it slowly as the dog understands the concept and develops.
